The first source code has been made available for the Open Government Platform – this project is intended to provide open source code that would enable any government, local or national, or organisation, to create an open data site. The first set of code is based on the US site, data.gov. The next code contribution will be from India, and based on that country’s equivalent open data web site, india.gov.in.
The US and India are engaged in a “Strategic Dialogue” to create what is called “data.gov-in-a-box” which will provide a ready made platform for other countries to implement open government principles and increase transparency and accountability. Aneesh Chopra, Federal Chief Technology Officer, said that “teams from the U.S. and Indian governments have been working together since August of this year, with a planned launch of the open source product … in early 2012”.
This first code that has been released concerns the tools needed to set up an automated process for publishing data on the platform; this Data Management System handles the submission and approval of data and the updating of the catalogues of data on the Open Government Platform. The next set of data that will come from India’s National Informatics Centre relates to providing web site access to the platform. The two countries are encouraging developers to get involved and provide feedback, new modules and capabilities.
The source code for the Open Government Platform is available to download from GitHub, under the terms of the GNU GPL.
